VH1′s Behind The Music: The Biography and Life Of T-Pain (Full Episode)

Behind The Music: T-Pain explores the rise of a shy kid from Tallahassee, Florida to the heights of the music industry. T-Pain was born Faheem Rasheed Najm into a stable, middle class family that supported his natural curiosity and talent in music at a very young age. An outsider in school, T-Pain spent most of his childhood locked in his makeshift bedroom aka his “studio,” producing his own music, eventually dropping out of the 8th grade to pursue his dreams full-time. As a teenager, he found local success with a young group called the Nappy Headz. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities in his hometown Tallahassee, Florida. The falling apart of his family and a tense relationship with his father, T-Pain ran away from home and signed with Akon’s fledgling label, Konvict Records. Finally on the national scene, his use of auto-tune created a signature sound and he quickly became one of the most sought-after producers, working with everyone from Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Britney Spears. A multi-platinum selling artist in his own right with 2005′s Rappa Ternt Sanga, 2007′s Epiphany, 2008′s Thr33 Ringz and his most recent release rEVOLVEr , T-Pain has produced and been featured on over 45 top ten songs. Those participating in the special include: T-Pain, his family including wife Amber Najm, whom T-Pain has been married to since 2003. They have three children: daughter Lyriq and sons Muziq and Kaydnz Kodah (born May 2009). His parents and his brother, Eric “DoeBoy” Youman, Akon and BU, Akon’s brother and the person who gave T-Pain his first big break with a label. Also Michael Blumstein, Dave Abrams and Rocco Valdez from Chase Entertainment. T-Pain’s stage name is short for “Tallahassee Pain” and was chosen because of the hardships he experienced while living there. He is a practicing Muslim. At just three years old he got his first taste of the music business. A friend of the family, gospel jazz artist/producer Ben Tankard allowed him to hang out and “twist the knobs” at his recording studio. At age ten, Najm turned his bedroom into a music studio, using a keyboard, a beat machine and a four-track recorder. Pain’s father, who he was close to as a child, found a keyboard on the side of the road and that was the beginning of his career in music. He learned to play it immediately, and soon realized he had a gift.

T-Pain eventually dropped out in the eighth grade to pursue his dreams full-time and found local success with his group the Nappy Headz. The story continues, detailing his entire journey and struggle up until today, showing how his relationship with his father fell apart when his dad started abusing drugs. The ups and downs with his unconventional marriage to his teenage girlfriend and how he blames himself for the split of his parents. Regardless of his struggles and personal pain, he’s become successful. T-Pain is the founder of the record label Nappy Boy Entertainment, established in 2005. Throughout his career as a singer, T-Pain has extensively used the Auto-Tune pitch correction effect.
