Hot Music Video – Diamonds – Rihanna + Unapologetic: Behind The Scenes

Diamonds” is a song recorded by recording artist Rihanna for her upcoming seventh studio album Unapologetic (2012). It was written by Sia Furler in collaboration with Benjamin “Benny Blanco” Levin, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen. It was produced by Blanco, as well as Eriksen and Hermansen under their production name Star Gate. “Diamonds” premiered in September 2012, during the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and was released the following day. Def Jam Recordings solicited the single to contemporary hit radio in the United States on October 2. “Diamonds” is a mid-tempo pop ballad with influences of electronic and soul music. The song is a departure from themes of “unhealthy relationships” that are evident in Rihanna’s previous singles. Reception for Diamonds was generally mixed; some reviewers complimented Rihanna’s different musical direction, while others criticized its musical production. Right after her performance at the iHeartRadio music festival in September 2012, Rihanna revealed that her single “Diamonds” would be released the same month. She described the track as “happy and hippy rather than dancey”, elaborating: “It’s laid-back but it’s hopeful. It’s a record that… gives me such a great feeling when I listen to it. The lyrics are very hopeful and positive, but it’s about love.” The cover artwork for the song was revealed on September 2012, and features Rihanna rolling diamonds in a manner suggestive of making a joint. Check out the “Diamonds” music video below after the jump…

Video Synopsis: The music video opens with a view of Rihanna lying in open waters, as other scenes of diamonds being rolled in a manner suggestive of making a blunt aka expensive looking marijuana cigarette. A scene reminiscent of the single’s artwork. As the video progresses Rihanna is shown running on a highway. In a black-and-white scene, Rihanna licks the joint and begins smoking it. The image fades to black as the song begins. Rihanna sings in the same black and white setting while being topless. In the water, her hand is intervened with a heavily tattooed arm of a man, whose face is not shown in the video. Quick images of a hotel room where Rihanna lies while singing are shown, with objects breaking, curtains falling and roses burning. Rihanna is shown again on the highway, where she is looking at aurora view in the sky.

She stops running and begins singing while looking around. The sky is shown glittering and shining as Rihanna revolves around starring at it. Throughout the video, the intertwined hands of Rihanna and her lover are shown slipping slowly apart, finally separating as the song ends. As the second verse starts, Rihanna’s shown in a desert where horses are allowed to run freely. Near the end, Rihanna is once again shown alone in the open waters, presumably depressed after the departure of the lover whose hand is shown holding Rihanna’s during the video. Different scenes of a street battles are shown; people are fighting while Rihanna is standing in the middle. Scenes of burned cars and broken glass are show around the environment. The video closes with the same scene from the beginning with Rihanna lying in the water.

Check out the behind the scenes above. Rihanna began shooting the music video for “Diamonds” on October 21, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. It was directed by her regular collaborator Anthony Mandler, who previously directed Rihanna’s music videos for Russian Roulette” (2009) and Man Down” (2011). Photographs of the production were leaked on the same day; on them, Rihanna is seen wearing a white and black dress as she stands in front of a fire and looks into the camera. Speaking to MTV News, Rihanna explained the concept behind the video explaining that with different abstract scenes she wanted to give the audience “the right emotion”. On November 7, 2012, a behind-the-scenes video was posted on MTV‘s official website. It features Rihanna emerging from a trailer, wrapped in a “leopard-print” robe and heading to the shooting set. The scenes are inter-cut with police officers chasing armed fighters. Scenes of Rihanna standing in a deserted landscape are also shown.

Unapologetic is the upcoming seventh studio album by recording artist Rihanna, scheduled for release on November 19, 2012 through Def Jam Recordings. The album’s lead single “Diamonds” made its premiere on iHeartRadio on September 26. To support the upcoming album, Rihanna went on the Diamonds World Tour back during March 2013. Rihanna spoke on the album’s sound saying she loves working with different sounds and putting them together. Rihanna also added “Right now we’re working on collecting and creating the sound first before we even start working on the lyrical direction or melodies. I kind of have an idea though, and it’s very rough right now. So I’m very eager to start that.” Sean Garrett spoke on the album’s sound and feel saying it was “a great mish-mash of genres.”

Rihanna said, “I love experimenting and I love working with different sounds and putting them together so they’re not one-dimensional.” In July 2012, British singer and producer Labrinth revealed to Capital FM that he had been working with Rihanna on the album saying, “I’m supposed to be working with her soon hopefully so I’ve spoke to her managers, I think she’s currently working on some stuff so everybody’s in there at the moment and she’s working in certain studios so it seems like it’s very exciting. She’s not in my studio [yet] but hopefully I’ll have some hot ones on her album.” It was also reported that Rihanna would be working with R&B singer Ne-Yo and N-Dubz member Fazer. In a interview with Capital FM Ne-Yo spoke on working with Rihanna on the album saying, “I just recently went in to do some stuff for Rihanna, you know. She’s the hardest working woman in showbiz right now. She’s in the process of putting together a new album as we speak, I got in with StarGate and David Guetta and a few other people for that project.” Kelly spoke on the songs he had wrote for Rihanna revealing the following; “Rihanna’s a worldwide superstar at this point and she’s performing in stadiums and arenas now, so I wanted songs that reflected her audience, when I was in London she was performing at a festival in front of like 30,000 to 40,000 people. So I didn’t want small songs that only worked on radio, so I tried to do anthemic big stadium-themed songs.” Well it looks like Rihanna’s new album is going to hit it out of the park and make waves in the industry again. Inspiring, good for her…

I hate this song. The repetition of that line makes my ears bleed. She seems like a self righteous, spoiled bitch, full of entitlement, splashed with narcissism. Could be a bit of a sociopath. But when she spit in the face of abuse victims who supported her during her trauma, by going back to Chris, that was it. I have no respect for her, and she really isn't worth me continuing to comment.

    • I agree with you in regards to Rihanna going back with Chris Brown and the smack in the face to those women who are abused and even killed because of assholes like CB. Rihanna is a self righteous bitch and doesn\’t care what anyone says. She has said that she doesn\’t want to be anybody\’s role model, yet she has millions who literally lick the ground she walks on. Its disgusting to say the least…

I think her mainstream song is not that bad, but the underlying message is all about CB and her relationship with him. If they both died and fell off the earth today, I wouldn\’t even bat an eye. Thats being real…
