The Braxton’s released their debut album So Many Ways in 1996 along with four singles “So Many Ways”, “Only Love“, “The Boss“ and “Slow Flow”. Sometime in mid 2004, Tamar was signed to Tommy Mottola‘s reactivated Casablanca Records and began work on her second album, currently titled Love and War. In a “Grindin’“ influenced single, “I’m Leaving,” was released with a guest appearance from Bump J. alongside promotional remixes featuring Sheek Louch, Styles P. and Ali Vegas. Tamar would release another single in mid 2004; however, Casablanca Record’s shifting business landscape interfered with the process of completing Tamar’s album. She later left the label without a commercial release to show for her work. During 2011, Tamar Braxton reunited with her sisters, The Braxtons, for the WE tv reality show, Braxton Family Values. In the breathtaking black-and-white video, a gorgeous Tamar hits the beach and shares intimate moments with her sexy co-star at a mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Tamar talked to Rap-Up TV about her new music video revealing, “The concept is just about me and my man at home, and we’re just trying to figure out our relationship because it’s been so tumultuous. We’re so in love and we wanna fix it, but we can’t escape all the obstacles that we’ve been going through. The video is all of those things—it’s passionate, it’s soft, it’s sexy, it’s sweet.”
In December 2012 Braxton spoke about her album saying “I’ve been working really hard on this album to make sure it was up to my standards. Because in the past, I just felt like I’ve done music that was up to other people’s standards. Everybody wanted me to sing songs like Toni. That’s not the kind of artist that I am. I really wanted to make sure that you get to see my sassiness, my fun-ness and, you know, me popping and dropping. I’m definitely doing that.”

Braxton revealed to Essence Magazine that she originally intended the song “Hot Sugar” to be released as the lead single from her second album, saying “given everything that happened to Vince and I this year, and everything we went through in our marriage, this song was fitting to me and Vince”, explaining “I’ve been in love before, and I’ve gotten my feelings hurt before but I’ve never experienced passion until I met Vince.” I’ve never argued this much with a person, and I’ve never loved this hard. That’s what this song is about.”
