Mariah’s song was titled “Almost Home”, and is the official lead single from the soundtrack album for the movie Oz the Great and Powerful, with the singer saying in a statement that the song has “a message that works beautifully with the film. It’s a feel-good record; it gives you the feeling of reaching your home and being with people that you love.” The song was recorded in New York City at Roc The Mic Studios, and released in a partnership between Def Jam Recordings and Disney Music Group for the promotional campaign for the movie. The single’s artwork was unveiled through Mariah’s Instagram account on February 14, 2013, with the single itself being officially released five days later. “Almost Home” is a pop and electro-pop song, with elements of other music genres such as R&B, hip hop and EDM. Mariah delivers an inspirational message with the song, and as described by MTV, the singer’s placed “right in the mythical land from the famed movie”, also singing during the chorus, “When you’re almost there / And you’re almost home / Just open up your eyes and go / When you’re almost there/ Almost home / Know you’re not alone / You’re almost home.”
Mariah’s two-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, inspired her to write the song. She told VH1′s show host Carrie Keagan from “Big Morning Buzz Live” the following about the song and how it came about, “I’ve always just loved Disney, and now especially having two little babies — like all we do is watch animated movies, even though they’re so little, they still love them, especially Roc, my little boy.”
Back in February 2012, Mariah had spoke with Showbiz Tonight. They had the first look at Mariah on the set for her new music video “Almost Home.” Mariah co-wrote and co-produced the song for Disney’s “Oz The Great and Powerful.” She revealed that, “When Disney approached me to be involved with the process of writing and recording the main song from Disney’s ‘Oz The Great and Powerful,’ I didn’t hesitate to say yes! It was a labor of love and a group effort. From the movies to the theme parks — I am a Disney fanatic, and this was so much fun to do.”
Mariah had spoke about her fourteenth studio album saying: “I’m collaborating with a lot of my favorite people but the main thing is [that] I’m not trying to follow any particular trend, I want it to be well received. I want to stay true to myself and the music that I love and make the fans happy.” Mariah’s fourteenth studio album is set for release in May 2013. July 2012, it was announced that Mariah joined the judging panel of American Idol for season twelve. Her salary is reported to be $18 million. During the same month, it was announced that Mariah would star in Lee Daniels‘ upcoming 2013 film The Butler, which is about a White House butler who served eight American Presidents over the course of three decades.
