“We Can’t Stop” is a song by recording artist Miley Cyrus, taken from her upcoming fourth studio album. It was released on June 3, as the lead single from the album, and it is the singer’s first official release by RCA Records, since her departure from Hollywood Records. The song was written by Mike L. Williams II, Pierre Ramon Slaughter, Timothy Thomas, Theron Thomas, Douglas Davis and Ricky Walters. It debuted at number 11 in the US and has since peaked number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Cyrus’ third highest charting title so far, only behind “Party in the U.S.A.“ and “The Climb“, and her seventh Top 10 in the United States.
The fourth studio album by Miley Cyrus is set to be released sometime in Fall 2013 via RCA Records. The new album was preceded by Miley’s popular hit song “We Can’t Stop,” which also presents Cyrus in a new image and musical style, aided by producer Mike Will Made It who also collaborates to the writing of the album. According to Billboard Magazine, Cyrus considers her forthcoming album her actual first as a grown artist. Check out Miley’s wild “We Can’t Stop” video after the jump…
The “We Can’t Stop” song was originally penned with Rihanna in mind. Cyrus had announced the single name and date of release on the 2013 Billboard Music Awards back in May 2013.She had described the song as “more funky and R&B, pop” than her earlier records, calling it “infectious”. She also said that it is “exactly what I wanted the first sound to be”and that she kept the song in secret for one year.
“We Can’t Stop” is a midtempo pop, R&B, dance track with a length of 3 minutes and 52 seconds. It was written in the key of E major and Cyrus’ vocals span two octaves. From a low D#3 to a high F#5. It follows the chord progression E—G#m—C#m—A. The song starts with a distorted voice singing the first couple verses, then Cyrus’ vocals begin followed by the keyboard chords. The pre-chorus and the chorus are accompanied with heavy beats. Miley explained to Ryan Seacrest that the song is really for her fans, “Everyone always judges and say what they want, but my fans have really stood by me no matter what I’ve been through and this is a song that says where I’m at in my life right now.” Talking about her upcoming album she says, “I’m really happy with my record because I feel like I have so many options for singles. My record is like a movie. It’s a story of what I’ve been going through the past two years.” From the looks of it its been CRAZY…
Miley shared that she’s going on tour soon, “Hopefully I’m touring ASAP. I’m going on a radio tour right now to play my song and take over everyone’s little green button.” The music video of “We Can’t Stop” was directed by Diane Martel and filmed in Los Angeles, California, during the last week of May 2013. It premiered on VEVO June 19 and broke a record garnering 10.7 million views in just 24 hours.
The video received mixed to positive reviews. The video has been criticized because of Miley’s erotic behavior. Indeed, she acts rather different from her past videos but she explained to Billboard magazine: “My last record I feel so disconnected from-I was 16 or 17 when I made it. When you’re in your 20s, you just don’t really know that person anymore.” Quickly, the video’s comments went sour. They were half negative reaching more than 246,506+ dislikes on Youtube and 304,932+ likes.
To promote her new single, Miley had also announced her single “We Can’t Stop” through social networks. Miley offered a free mini-show program “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in Los Angeles. Watch part 1 just CLICK HERE and part 2 of the interview just CLICK HERE. Cyrus also visited the program “Live! With Kelly and Michael” in New York. Cyrus began a series of interviews on US radio, which is also now being considered a official “Radio Tour”. Miley started off her performance by grinding on some random on a couch while various dancers twerked out on stage, carried around big teddy bears and rode on a stationary bike while acting wild and care free.
Kimmel had commented at the start of his interview with Cyrus, “I did not realize when you walked out you were wearing your underpants.” He also wondered about the inspiration for the “We Can’t Stop” video’s weird party scenes, to which Cyrus responded, “It’s inspired by true events. It’s not just from one night. We had the Corona bottle piñata with the hot dogs in it; that was from my brother’s birthday.” As for the video’s french-fry skull, “I just thought that was cool.”
Kimmel and Cyrus discussed her weed-based friendship with Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion saying, “We’re more alike than you think, we’re very similar.” Which Kimmel replied, “That’s because he’s so high, he doesn’t know what his name is.” Miley had responded, while laughing, “Me too, so it’s fine. We both are. That’s why we get along so well, I guess.” Her first performance of her single was followed with a duet on “Fall Down” with Will.i.am. Miley is said to be currently battling laryngitis.
In her Billboard cover story, Cyrus had stated that her fourth album would be a reintroduction of herself to the world, “I want to start as a new artist. I consider my upcoming album my first, really,” she said. The album will feature an urban direction, but will maintain Cyrus’ country vibe. Miley described the sound as “count-step,” merging the two names of the two dominant styles for the album, country and also dubstep, in one word. During the interview, Cyrus’ producers also said Miley had written music before the album’s direction had been decided, bringing the Dr. Luke produced ballad “Wrecking Ball” from her old recording sessions. She teamed up with Pharrell in Miami, Florida where they initiated the new sound with songs like “4 x 4″ and “Rubber Band.” Neither songs are confirmed to be included on the album’s final list, as Cyrus had stated that “people weren’t getting them [the songs].”
One of the album’s possible songs will include guest rapper Future. It is called “Stand by Me,” which producer Mike Will Made It describes as “one of the greatest songs ever; a big feel-good, stadium, Super Bowl-sounding record.” The producer also mentioned the name “Drive,” which is also promising a dubstep dance track.
While on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!“ Miley had added that the bread actually means something as well, “Got to get the bread! A little bit of money. And also that it’s kind of weird. A trippy moment. We thought it was symbolic for money.”
While on “Good Morning America“ Miley was also asked about the critics who have called the video clip racy. Miley had replied, “They haven’t been to a good party in a minute. I was excited when the song came out but I really wanted the music video to come out because it shows exactly where I was in my life when we started working on ‘We Can’t Stop.'” Hmm, what will we see next in her videos?
